Basic, and basically excellent soldering iron January 14, 2009 Thomist Reader (Ocala, Florida) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
There are some products that don't change much over the years because they do exactly what you want and the quality is built-in, as they say. This is one such product. If you had a Weller iron, as I did, 30 years ago, this is still the same one, with the improvement that the barrel is stainless. It doesn't discolor like the old Wellers did, which matters to some people, I suppose.
Only slight down side is that the tips are a particular screw-in thread that seems unique to Weller. I tried the Radio Shack tips and the threads aren't the same. Amazon doesn't sell just the tips, and very few places do. Fortunately you get three with this iron, but eventually you're going to have to shop around for some new ones. Hopefully Amazon will be selling them by then!

THIS PRODUCT WAS A EXCELLENT PURCHASE I BOUGHT IT TO MOD A XBOX 360 CONTROLLER THAT HAD VERY TINY SPOTS TO BE SOLDERED IT WAS EASY WITH THE TIPS THEY GIVE YOU AND THE SOLDER IS GOOD TO WOULDENT THING TWICE ABOUT ORDERING WELLER PRODUCTS AGAIN
Good for newbies May 22, 2010 M. Thomas (Tampa, FL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great light duty iron that performs well on DIY projects, small repair etc. The "kit" idea I'm not sold on - just buy the iron alone where possible since you'll be needing a sturdy stand and perhaps some "helping hands" anyway for safety. If you do go with this kit then toss out the tired little piece of solder it comes with and get yourself some 60/40 with flux.
Worth the Money August 26, 2009 wy4j (Miami, FL) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've been in the electronics hobby for over 30 years and own a few soldering iron. This time I had to build a high voltage power supply replacement board for a 2,000 watt a linear amplifier and the two soldering guns were just too hot for soldering small components. I found this one at a the Radio Shack site but they wanted too much for the shipping. I can say that this inexpensive tool worked flawlessly is a perfect soldering pencil for small jobs that do not required lots of heat and also for the first-time user who has very basic needs. It includes all the pieces you need for your first soldering project. In my humble opinion, it's worth the price (cheap!) and much better than alternatives that are [...] bucks cheaper
Works well for my needs November 25, 2009 Stuart Richman (Freehold NJ) I am an occasional tinkerer when it comes to soldering. I needed to replace the cable on my favorite pair of headphones. The soldering iron did the job with no problem. Not a professional tool but for the money definitely recommended.
